After several days of forced evacuations, the Buchenwald camp is taken over by the prisoners themselves, then reached by American troops.

The Buchenwald camp is liberated in the spring, after several days of forced evacuations during which some of the prisoners had been driven out onto the roads. The liberators find there survivors from across Europe, including a group of Jewish adolescents who had arrived from the ghettos and camps of Poland, whom the camp's prisoners had concealed to shield them from the convoys.
