the community attacked

The Rintfleisch massacres reverberated as far as Vienna, where the community was attacked. Duke Albert, who had become emperor that year, intended to protect the Jews who fell under his chamber's authority and paid him tribute.

Austria then had a learned Judaism, whose Viennese school of Isaac ben Moïse, author of the Or Zaroua, was the center for all of central Europe. The ducal protection held this time; it would not hold in fourteen twenty, when the community would be annihilated on the order of the sovereign himself.
