the community destroyed despite the protection of Duke Albert II
The community of Krems, on the Danube, was destroyed during the Black Death, despite the protection of Duke Albert II of Austria.
The duke had publicly taken the side of the Jews, as had Pope Clement VI, and had pursued rioters; this prevented neither the massacre at Krems nor that of the neighboring town of Stein. It is one of the clearest cases showing that princely protection, even when sincere, counted for nothing against a city that had made up its mind.
