the community burned

In Constance, on the lake, the community was burned. The Jews had been imprisoned there for several months, during which time the city negotiated with the Duke of Austria, on whom they depended.

This slowness is instructive: this was not a crowd swept away by passion, but a procedure. People were imprisoned, rights over property were debated, and the burning took place once the patrimonial question had been settled. The council that, two generations later, would be held in that same city, would legislate anew on the Jews.
