The community of Vienna, the largest in the country before the annexation, is emptied in less than two years under pressure from the emigration bureau and the violence. Those who leave must abandon their possessions; those who remain are for the most part elderly and destitute people, whom nothing can any longer bring out. Departures cease with the outbreak of war.
