the community destroyed

Iphofen, a wine-growing town in Franconia, had a small community that was destroyed during the passage of the Rintfleisch band. It appears in the Memorbuch of Nuremberg among the localities annihilated that summer.

These towns represent the true face of Franconian Judaism of that time: not large cities, but a scattering of communities of a few families, living from moneylending and small trade, dispersed along the roads. It was this fabric that the summer of Rintfleisch tore apart, and that the following decades only partially reconstituted.
