After the annexation of Austria, a camp is opened near Mauthausen, on the Danube, around a granite quarry whose staircase becomes an instrument of death.
The Mauthausen camp is opened in Upper Austria a few months after the annexation, near a granite quarry whose staircase will remain the emblem of the site. Classified under the harshest regime of all the camps, it receives prisoners from across Europe. Jews are assigned to the most lethal labor in the quarry; the camp will spread into numerous satellite camps throughout the Danube valley.
