The community of Kalisz was attacked during the Black Death.

The city is the one where Boleslas the Pious had granted, in the thirteenth century, the charter that established the status of Jews in Poland: protection of person and property, freedom of commerce and lending, autonomous jurisdiction. This status, confirmed by Casimir III, made Poland the refuge of Ashkenazi Judaism.
