The Polish troops of Czarniecki carried out acts of violence against the community of Kalisz, accused of having colluded with the Swedes.
The Jews of Greater Poland had, like the towns, sworn allegiance to the Swedes when they occupied the country, having had no choice; the reconquest made them pay for it. Kalisz was one of the oldest communities in the kingdom, the very one to which Prince Boleslas the Pious had granted, four centuries earlier, the statute that served as a charter for all of Polish Jewry.
