The Jewish quarter of Kazimierz, a suburb of Cracovie, was attacked during a riot.
Kazimierz was the Jewish city of the Polish capital, with its synagogues, its cemetery and its schools; it was there that Moïse Isserles taught, whose glosses on the Choulhan Aroukh became the binding law of Ashkenazic Judaism, and the masters who trained generations of rabbis from Eastern Europe. The riots there were the work of university students and trade guilds, and the crown suppressed them.
