After the Battle of Lepanto, the Senate of Venice voted to expel the Jews; the measure was suspended the following year.
They were accused of having dealings with the Ottomans, against whom the republic had just fought. The Senate reversed its decision when it became apparent that the city's modest credit and its Levantine trade would suffer; it was utility, not favor, that served as protection.
