Italian police and German police arrest during the night the Jewish inhabitants of the Venice ghetto, house by house; the community's registers had been seized a few weeks earlier.

The Venice roundup takes place in December, in the oldest ghetto in Europe, whose name gave the word its meaning. The community's lists are used to carry out the arrests; the Italian police lend a hand. Those arrested in Venice are imprisoned in a city jail and then transported across the Lagoon to Fossoli. The elderly residents of the rest home will be taken in a second operation.
