The city where Jews had obtained the broadest privileges in the peninsula sees its community arrested in small groups; its great synagogue, ruined by bombardment, will not be rebuilt in the same form.

Arrests strike Livourne at the beginning of the year. The city, founded as a free port, had welcomed Sephardic exiles under a charter that guaranteed them freedom of worship and made its community one of the most important in the western Mediterranean, in constant contact with the Maghreb. Its great synagogue, one of the most beautiful on the peninsula, was destroyed by the bombings. The Jews arrested in Livourne are taken to the transit camps of the north.
