Un ouragan et une secousse frappèrent Rome au printemps, et la rumeur courut qu'un crucifix avait été raillé dans la synagogue. Le pape Benoît VIII fit instruire l'affaire et livrer au bûcher plusieurs Juifs de la ville ; la tradition rapporte que les intempéries cessèrent aussitôt, ce qui valut au récit d'être répété. L'épisode est connu par la chronique d'Adémar de Chabannes, écrite en Aquitaine peu après les faits, et il précède d'une décennie les persécutions de l'an mille en Rhénanie et en France.
