The Jews were expelled from Perugia after the preaching of the Observant Franciscans.
The Observants preached throughout the cities of Italy against Jewish usury and promoted in its place the establishment of monti di pietà, which lent on pledges at low interest rates; the expulsion of Jewish moneylenders often followed the founding of such a monte. It was these same sermons that also gave rise, in northern Italy, to ritual murder accusations during the same generation.
