L'installation du Saint-Office en Aragon se heurta à une résistance qui n'était pas seulement celle des conversos : le royaume tenait à ses fueros, et le tribunal, castillan d'origine, y passait pour une atteinte aux libertés locales. Une conjuration de notables convertis, appuyée par des familles de la haute administration aragonaise, décida d'abattre l'inquisiteur Pedro de Arbués.

Il fut frappé la nuit, dans la cathédrale de la Seo de Saragosse, alors qu'il priait à genoux ; il portait, dit-on, une cotte de mailles sous sa robe. Il mourut deux jours après.

La répression fut immédiate et méthodique : les conjurés furent traqués, jugés, exécutés, leurs corps exposés, leurs maisons rasées et le terrain semé de sel. Des dizaines de conversos furent brûlés au long des années suivantes, et l'opposition aragonaise au tribunal fut brisée. Arbués fut canonisé au XIXᵉ siècle, et la nef de la Seo porte encore le lieu de sa mort.
