A ritual murder accusation, known as the case of the holy child of La Guardia de Saragosse, was brought against the community of Aragon and followed by attacks on the Jewish quarter. The affair is one of the earliest of its kind in the peninsula.
Jacques Iᵉʳ d'Aragon protected the Jews of his kingdoms and ordered an investigation; royal privileges placed them under his direct protection, as a treasure of the crown. The protection held in Saragosse that day; it was never sufficient when the riot broke out faster than justice could act.
