The Jewish quarter of Rome was attacked during a riot.

The community of Rome is the oldest in Europe, uninterrupted since Antiquity, and the popes had protected it as a matter of principle while keeping it in an inferior condition. Riots there were the work of the city's populace, and the pontifical authority suppressed them; a generation later, it would be that authority itself which imposed the ghetto.
