The property of the Portuguese marranos who had taken refuge in the papal port of Ancona was seized.
Ancona was the port of the Papal States on the Adriatic, and the popes had attracted Portuguese merchants there through safe-conducts, for trade with the Levant, guaranteeing them that they would not be troubled on account of their religion. These guarantees were withdrawn, restored, and withdrawn again depending on the pontificate; it is one of the cases where one can best see what the word given to converts was worth at the time.
