Pope Clement VII forbade the Jews of Italy from receiving the fugitive new Christians.

The question facing all of Italy was that of the return to Judaism: forcibly baptized people from Portugal were arriving and wished to return to the faith of their fathers, which canon law regarded as apostasy and punished by death. The Italian communities that received them thus exposed themselves as well, and it is on this ground that the Holy Office of Rome would soon strike the Jews of Rome themselves.
