Expulsion of Jews from the city, who could only resettle in the Ghetto quarter

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

Venice expelled the Jews from the city; they would not be able to resettle there until several decades later, confined to the quarter of the Ghetto.

The republic had need of Jewish moneylenders for small-scale lending to the people, and tolerated them in Mestre, on the mainland, allowing them to come into the city for business. The word ghetto comes from the place to which they were assigned in fifteen sixteen: the foundry, *getto* in Venetian, whose name passed from there into all the languages of Europe.
