The Dreyfus Affair sparked anti-Jewish riots of unprecedented violence in Algeria. In Alger, shops were looted, synagogues attacked, and the unrest lasted several days under the leadership of Max Régis, who would be elected mayor of the city the following year.
The Crémieux Decree had made the Jews of Algeria French citizens, without extending the same to Muslims. This collective naturalization is at the heart of the unrest, which metropolitan anti-Jewish parties fueled from Algeria because they found more favorable ground there than in France. The election of Régis shows that the riots were not an outburst but the expression of a local majority.
