The nationalist group Tacuara multiplies in Buenos Aires, following the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem, its attacks against Argentine Jews: synagogues targeted, tracts distributed, students beaten. In June 1962, the student Graciela Sirota is abducted at a bus stop, tortured, and branded on her chest with a swastika, her captors presenting their act as reprisals.
The affair shakes the country: the labor federation calls for a work stoppage, universities mobilize, and Parliament debates antisemitism. Argentina was home to the largest Jewish community in Latin America and also to fleeing Nazis; the violence of Tacuara foreshadows that of the years of dictatorship, during which Jewish victims among the disappeared will be proportionally overrepresented.
