The Shoah (1939–1945)

Second Status and School Numerus Clausus in Algeria

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

After the repeal of the Crémieux decree, a new law limits to a small proportion the access of Jewish children to public schools; thousands of students are expelled at the start of the school year.

With the Crémieux Decree having been repealed the previous year, the Jews of Algeria lost the French citizenship they had held for three generations. A second statute came to limit children's access to public schools to a small proportion: thousands of pupils were turned away at the start of the school year, and the community hastily opened makeshift classrooms in synagogues and whatever premises it could rent. Dismissed teachers gave lessons there without pay. The numerus clausus also struck the liberal professions; lawyers and doctors in Algeria were struck off their professional rolls.
