The simultaneity shows that this was a coordinated operation between two neighboring Gauleiter, and not a series of separate initiatives. It emptied of their Jews the Rhenish regions where Jewish presence dated back to the Middle Ages — Speyer, Worms, and Mainz, the three cities that had formed the cradle of Ashkenazi Judaism, lie within this zone or on its fringes.
