Hungarian occupation of Bačka strikes the largest Jewish community in the province: forced labor, plunder, then departure for the convoys of summer after the entry of German troops into Hungary.

Subotica was home to the largest Jewish community in Bačka, blending Ashkenaze families who had come from the north with long-established merchants. When the province was annexed by Hungary in the spring that followed the invasion, the city came under a regime of racial laws already well-tested: exclusion from the professions, revocation of commercial licenses, requisition of able-bodied men for labor battalions sent to the Eastern Front. Many never returned. Those who remained in Subotica were gathered into an enclosed quarter when German troops entered Hungary, then led to the province's railway stations and joined to convoys rolling eastward in the early summer. The city's great synagogue, one of the most beautiful in the region, stood on for a community that never came back.
