Persecution and deportation of the Jews of Bečej

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The community of Bečej experiences the fate of annexed Bačka: exclusion, requisition of men for labor, then gathering and departure eastward in early summer.

Bečej had a Jewish community established along the Tisa, living from the grain trade and craftsmanship. Brought under Hungarian administration along with the rest of Bačka, it experienced the now-familiar sequence: census, exclusion from trades, confiscation of businesses, conscription of men into labor units. Women, children, and the elderly remained in the town until the German occupation of Hungary, which triggered the final phase. They were then concentrated, searched, stripped of their last valuables, and directed toward the convoys that left the province in early summer. The community of Bečej did not reconstitute itself.
