Macedonia comes under Bulgarian administration and the Jews of Bitola, one of the oldest Sephardic communities in the Balkans, are stripped of their businesses and denied nationality; they will be deported two years later.
The Jews of Bitola come under Bulgarian administration when Macedonia is occupied in the spring. They are immediately stripped of their nationality, barred from professions, and subjected to forced levies. The community of Bitola, known as Monastir, was one of the oldest and poorest in the Balkans, Judeo-Spanish in tongue, settled there since the Ottoman era. Two years later it would be rounded up and handed over for deportation.
