The Jews of the capital receive orders to leave Sofia within days for towns inland, with what they can carry; a demonstration in the city streets is dispersed and its leaders arrested.
The Jews of Sofia are expelled from the capital to provincial towns in the spring, following the suspension of deportations. Each family receives a few days' notice and permission to take only a portion of their belongings; the rest is left behind or sold for next to nothing. The expellees from Sofia are housed in schools and with local residents, under surveillance, and the men remain subject to forced labor. They will return after the war to find their homes occupied, and most will subsequently emigrate.
