In July 2012, a bomb exploded on a bus that had just taken on board Israeli tourists on the tarmac of Bourgas airport, on the Bulgarian coast of the Black Sea. The vehicle was destroyed; among those killed were passengers and the Bulgarian driver, and many wounded were hospitalized.

The attack targeted vacationers in a European Union country to which Israelis traveled in large numbers. The Bulgarian investigation, pursued over several years, led the European Union to place the military wing of Hezbollah on its list of terrorist organizations. Bourgas has since strengthened security checks on flights from Israel.
