Attack — Tel-Aviv, central bus station

The central bus station of Tel Aviv, opened in the Neve Sha'anan neighborhood, was at the time the largest bus terminal in the country and the daily transit point for immigrant workers from the southern part of the city. On January 5, 2003, two suicide bombers detonated themselves within seconds of each other in the crowded streets bordering the station, the second explosion targeting those who had rushed to help the first victims. Among the dead were several foreign workers — Romanians, Bulgarians, Chinese, Ghanaians — who had come to seek employment in Israel, giving the attack an unusually international dimension within this war. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility.
