The Carmel Market is Tel-Aviv's great popular market: stalls of fruit, spices, and clothing are packed into alleyways where the crowd can neither disperse nor be screened. The charge explodes at one of the entrances.
Israeli markets — the Carmel Market as well as Mahané Yehouda in Jerusalem — have been attacked on multiple occasions for precisely this reason: open spaces, without barriers or guards at the entrances, they draw a clientele of all ages and all backgrounds. The attack occurs as the wave of suicide bombings is subsiding, and it ranks among the last perpetrated in the heart of Tel-Aviv.
