The Haifa refinery, the largest industrial installation in the country, employed Jewish and Arab workers side by side. At the end of December, a month after the partition vote, a grenade attack was carried out by the Irgun at the entrance, targeting Arab workers who were waiting to be hired.

The reprisal was immediate. The working crowd turned against the Jewish employees inside the compound, who were chased down and killed with iron bars and tools; the British police took more than an hour to enter the refinery.

It is one of the deadliest episodes of the civil war that preceded the end of the Mandate, and it marked the definitive rupture between the two working-class communities of Haifa.
