The Maxim is a seaside restaurant in southern Haïfa, long run by two associated families, one Jewish and one Arab Christian, and frequented by both communities of the city. On October 4, 2003, on the eve of Yom Kippour, a lawyer from Jénine entered the dining room and detonated her explosive belt in the middle of lunch. Members of both owner families were among the dead, as were several children and three generations of the same family. Palestinian Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack. Israel responded the following day by bombing a camp in Syria, the first strike on Syrian territory since the Yom Kippour war. The restaurant has reopened and bears a plaque in memory of its patrons and staff.
