Riots of 1929
août 1929·Motza
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
the Maklef family massacred in their home
At Motza, at the gates of Jerusalem, the Maklef family is massacred in their home during the same riots.
The village had long been a point of contact between its Jewish inhabitants and the neighboring Arab villages, and the family maintained regular relations of neighborliness there. It is this proximity that strikes contemporaries: the riot of that summer breaks local bonds that political conflict had not yet reached, and it is the rupture of those bonds, more than the number of victims, that chroniclers record.
