The Jewish community of Haïfa defended the ramparts alongside the Fatimid garrison during the siege led by Tancrède, and the city was taken by assault. The inhabitants were put to the sword.
This is the only known instance, during the Latin conquest, of a Jewish community holding a fortified position arms in hand: Albert d'Aix, a Latin source, notes it with astonishment. The Muslim chronicle of Ibn al-Qalanisi confirms both the defense and the fall. After the capture, Haïfa long remained a port of little importance.
