Early Middle Ages and Crusades

Communities dispersed or ransomed during the establishment of the Latin kingdom; survivors flow back toward Egypt and Tyre

1100-1101·Ramla, Jaffa, Ascalon

Toll
inconnu

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The establishment of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem dismantled one by one the communities of the coastal plain. Those of Ramla, Jaffa, and Ascalon were dispersed, and the survivors were ransomed by their conquerors as well as by those who organized their redemption.

The letters of the Cairo Genizah follow these months almost week by week: lists of captives, appeals for funds addressed to the communities of Egypt, negotiations to ransom also the holy books taken away by the Franks. The refugees fell back toward Tyr, still Muslim, and toward Egypt, where many remained.
