In December 2001, a suicide bomber blew himself up on a city bus in Haïfa, the day after the double bombing on Ben-Yehuda Street in Jerusalem. The vehicle, packed during rush hour, was blasted from within; the passengers killed and wounded were Jewish and Arab alike, as is the population of the city.

Haïfa had a reputation as a city where the two communities lived intermingled, and the attacks that struck it during the second Intifada were felt there as an assault on that coexistence as well. City buses, which everyone rides to work or school, had by then become the most frequent target.
