Attack — Haifa, bus 37
5 mars 2003·Haïfa, bus 37
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
Line 37 connects Mount Carmel to the center of Haïfa, serving the university and several high schools; it is one of the few buses in the country where Jewish and Arab passengers ride together daily, the city having always been mixed. On March 5, 2003, a law student from Hébron boarded near the Hof HaCarmel intersection and detonated his charge; among the dead were students from the Leo Baeck school and an Arab Christian family from the city. The attack thus struck a population its perpetrators claimed to spare, and it was felt in Haïfa as an assault on the model of coexistence from which the city drew its pride. Hamas claimed responsibility.
