the Jewish quarter attacked and burned
In the month of August, during the riots that engulfed Mandatory Palestine, the Jewish quarter of Safed was attacked and set ablaze.
Safed is one of the four holy cities of Judaism, a center of Kabbalah in the sixteenth century, and its community has been established there without interruption ever since. The riots of that summer arose from a dispute over the holy sites of Jerusalem and spread across the entire country; in Hebron and in Safed, they destroyed ancient communities that had lived apart from the nascent national conflict.
