Jewish quarters attacked during the change of power
The transition of Palestine from Mamluk to Ottoman rule was accompanied, during the interval in which no authority held the country, by unrest and looting. The Jewish quarters of Safed and Hebron were attacked; in Hebron, the community, established near the Tomb of the Patriarchs, was particularly vulnerable.
The new power quickly restored order and granted the communities a protected status. Safed then entered its most brilliant century: the exiles from Spain founded academies there, the city became the center of the Kabbalah of Joseph Caro and Isaac Luria, and its printing press would be the first in the Near East.
