The death of Emperor Maximilian, protector of the Empire's communities, leaves Ratisbonne without recourse. The city council, encouraged by the preacher Balthasar Hubmaier, orders the Jews to depart within a few days; the cemetery is ransacked, its gravestones carried off as building materials, and the synagogue demolished.

Upon its foundations there immediately rises a chapel dedicated to the "Beautiful Mary," which becomes a place of pilgrimage of considerable fervor. Two engravings by Albrecht Altdorfer, a city councillor and witness to the events, depict the interior of the synagogue a few days before its destruction: they remain one of the rare pictorial documents of a medieval German synagogue.
