An accusation of host desecration was brought against the Jews of Ratisbon and the community was attacked. The city had, however, eleven years earlier refused to hand over its own people to the band of Rintfleisch, and its council prided itself on that fact.

The community of Ratisbon was the oldest in Germany, attested as early as the tenth century, and one of the few to pass through the entire Middle Ages without interruption: it would not be destroyed until fifteen nineteen, by expulsion rather than massacre. Its longevity owed much to the constant protection of a town council that saw it as being in its interest.
