The Jews were expelled from Rothenburg ob der Tauber and their quarter destroyed.

The Franconian city had in the thirteenth century been home to the school of Meïr de Rothenburg, the greatest master of German Judaism, who died a prisoner of the emperor, having refused to allow a ransom to be paid for him. His school, his synagogue, and his cemetery were erased; tombstones were used in the city walls, where they can still be seen today.
