The Portuguese New Christians who had taken refuge in Venice were pursued as Judaizers.

Venice welcomed Portuguese merchants for their trade with the Levant and the Indies, and turned a blind eye to their religion as long as the interests of the republic so demanded; but the Venetian Inquisition, which answered to the Senate as much as to Rome, opened proceedings against them when papal pressure grew stronger. These refugees eventually obtained the right to live openly as Jews, which made Venice one of the gateways for a return to Judaism.
