Rothenburg ob der Tauber, an imperial city in Franconia, was home to one of the most learned communities in the Empire: it was there that Meir de Rothenburg had taught, the highest rabbinical authority of German Jewry, who had died a prisoner of the Emperor some years earlier for having wished to leave the country with his people.

The band of Rintfleisch destroyed the community. The Jewish quarter of Rothenburg, subsequently reconstituted, was annihilated once more at the time of the Black Death, then definitively expelled the following century. The danse macabre painted in the church and the "house of the Jewish dance" are all that recalls its presence today.
