Rintfleisch Massacres in Upper Franconia
1298·Bayreuth
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
the community destroyed
The community of Bayreuth was destroyed during the Rintfleisch massacres. This is the first known mention of Jews in this Upper Franconian town, and it is one of their destruction.
The case is not uncommon: for many German localities, the Memorbuch that records the dead is the only proof that a community had ever existed there. One learns at once that it was and that it ceased to be, and the history of a local Judaism then resides entirely in a list of names.
