Expulsion ordered by Ferdinand I after the fires of Prague, attributed to Jews

1541·Prague, Bohême

Toll
toll not established

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

A series of fires ravages Prague; rumor, spread by the guilds, attributes responsibility to the Jews, and confessions are obtained under torture. Ferdinand I, pressed by the Bohemian estates, orders the departure of the communities from the kingdom, with the exception of a few families permitted to remain.

The expulsion was poorly enforced, revoked, then renewed a generation later. Prague subsequently found, under Rodolphe II, a position without equal in Central Europe: its community, that of the Maharal and of Mordekhaï Meisel, became the largest in Christendom, and its Vieille-Nouvelle synagogue remains in use.
