Au cours de la guerre de Succession d'Autriche, les Prussiens et les Français avaient occupé Prague ; on accusa la communauté juive d'avoir pactisé avec l'occupant. Marie-Thérèse signa un décret d'expulsion générale : les Juifs de Prague devaient partir à la fin du mois suivant, ceux de Bohême et de Moravie dans les six mois.

Le départ se fit en plein hiver. Les chroniques de la communauté décrivent des convois de charrettes sur les routes gelées, des accouchements en chemin, des morts de froid ; les exilés se répartirent dans les villages de Bohême, puis en Saxe, en Hongrie et en Pologne.

La révocation fut arrachée par une intervention diplomatique sans précédent : l'Angleterre, les Provinces-Unies, le Danemark, la Pologne, Venise et la Porte ottomane firent démarche auprès de Vienne, à la demande des communautés d'Amsterdam et de Londres. Le retour fut autorisé au bout de quelques années, contre une taxe de tolérance considérable et pour un temps limité, renouvelable.
