Westerbork, on the moorland of Drenthe, had been opened before the war by the Dutch government to receive refugees from Germany. The occupier took it over and made it the country's sole transit camp.
Almost all the Jews of the Netherlands passed through it before being sent to Auschwitz and Sobibór; the convoys departed on Tuesdays, and the list of those leaving, drawn up by the camp's Jewish administration, was read aloud the previous evening. Anne Frank and her family stayed there before their deportation.
